Our Portfolio

Actively Shaping a Sustainable Future

Koehler Renewable Energy facilities generate power and heat from renewable energies – right where our partners need them.

Thanks to us, the lion’s share of the energy required for our paper production now comes from renewable sources.

Our Expertise

Since it was founded in 2012, Koehler Renewable Energy GmbH has completed numerous projects in the fields of wind energy, photovoltaics, hydroelectricity, and biomass cogeneration plant. The firm’s experts are fully conversant with all stages of the value chain; thanks to their extensive experience, they can handle acquisition, planning, and development – and ensure seamless ongoing operation.

Koehler Renewable Energy is striving for continued growth in renewable energies in the years ahead. In tandem with various partners, the experienced team has already completed projects worth several hundred million euros, with these projects generating ever greater volumes of power, heat, and steam every year.

As a subsidiary of the Koehler Group, Koehler Renewable Energy has its roots in the generation of energy, heat, and steam for use in paper manufacturing. Koehler Renewable Energy is therefore also instrumental in ensuring that the Koehler Paper Group is the cost leader within its paper production segments.

As steam generation is essential in these areas, one core competency of the experts at Koehler Renewable Energy is the production of power and steam from biomass, such as old wood and agricultural scrap materials. The only CO₂ released is the CO₂ already absorbed and stored within the material – and which would be released anyway during the decomposition process.

Together with our customers, we design a customized, carbon-neutral energy supply using a power plant. On request, we will then implement it. Our existing customers include firms from the food, packaging, chemical, petroleum, paper, and horticultural sectors. Over the years, we have also built up considerable expertise in the planning, completion, and operation of wind power, hydroelectric, and photovoltaic plants – and this expertise benefits our customers. As in all other areas, we work both on our own and with partners.

Our Solutions

Koehler Renewable Energy facilities generate power and heat from renewable energies – right where our partners need them. Thanks to us, the lion’s share of the energy required for our paper production now comes from renewable sources.

By virtue of this decentralized approach to energy generation, positive synergy effects can be harnessed along the entire value chain. After all, the process of generating power from biomass not only produces electrical energy, but thermal energy too. Heat, cold, and process steam are needed in many production processes. With this in mind, we not only give our partners the opportunity to benefit from our extensive experience by becoming contractees, but also remove their barriers to entry in terms of decentralized energy generation. As such, they can focus on their core area of business while still helping to counteract climate change.

We generate our electricity at biomass, wind, solar, and hydroelectric plants at various locations in Germany, Ireland, and Scotland, working with a host of different partners. Together, we undertake the entire process, from the development of a customized solution through to planning, approval, financing, and operation. Drawing on a variety of approaches, it is possible to devise solutions that reduce your environmental footprint without you having to invest yourself.

Biomass

Biomass

Here, energy in the form of power and steam is generated through the incineration of biomass. Suitable fuels include agricultural scrap materials, old woods of various classes, and other materials.

The key benefit compared to the burning of fossil fuels (e.g. coal) is that the only CO₂ released is the CO₂ stored in the wood – and this would be released anyway during decomposition.

Wind Power

Wind Power

With wind power (also known as wind energy), energy is generated using the large-scale harnessing of wind as a renewable source.

Humans have been using wind as an energy source for hundreds of years. While the wind used to be converted into mechanical energy (e.g. to grind grain into flour), it is now used to produce electricity with large wind turbines.

Photovoltaics

Photovoltaics

This refers to the direct conversion of light energy (mostly sunlight) into electrical energy by means of solar cells. Photovoltaic technology is perfect for the sustainable generation of green power. Thanks to sharp declines in solar panel prices, photovoltaics now represent one of the cheapest ways of generating power in many places.

We plan, build, and manage photovoltaic systems of all sizes – from solar parks through to installations on the roofs of industrial customers.

Hydroelectric

Hydroelectric

Hydroelectric power is the energy generation method most closely linked to the paper industry. Water is a key process element in the paper industry and was previously used to power stampers for the purpose of eradicating lumps.

Nowadays, water is used to generate renewable energy. After coal and gas, it represents the third most common type of electricity generation in the world.

Heat Contracting

Heat Contracting

With our biomass plants, we supply industrial customers with steam for their production processes – and provide public utilities with heat for their commercial and private customers.

Our facilities are precisely tailored to the needs of our customers. Thanks to CHP technology, our plants achieve a high level of efficiency; through the use of biomass, they also benefit from a sustainable supply of fuel.

Investments are funded by Koehler Renewable Energy GmbH and refinanced by means of long-term heat supply agreements.
